The steering rods can be replaced without removing the steering gear, but to facilitate access to the elements and parts, it is recommended to remove the steering gear.
Removal
1. Disconnect the ball joint pin of the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a puller (see above).
2. Loosen the tie rod lock nut and unscrew the tie rod end, holding the tie rod from turning with a wrench.
3. Count the number of threads on the end when unscrewing so that you can pre-adjust the front wheel alignment during installation.
4. Remove the rack boot clamps and remove the boot.
5. Turn the steering gear shaft so that the joint between the rack and the steering rod extends as far as possible from the steering gear housing. 6. Hold the steering gear rack (by the flat) with an open-end wrench and unscrew the steering rod with another wrench.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
