Checking the tightness of connections and seals
Check the engine compartment for loose components, broken or pinched vacuum hoses, faulty plugs, connectors, or other missing or disconnected components among those listed below.
Checking the correct routing of hoses and electrical wiring
Check that the following hoses and electrical wiring are routed correctly to ensure they are kept away from moving or hot parts.
Inspect the following items:
- fuel hoses fuel lines;
- air conditioner hose;
- vacuum hoses;
- high voltage wire for ignition system;
- low voltage electrical wiring.
Checking the movement or ease of movement of lever mechanisms, valves and other components
Accelerator cable
Check the accelerator cable free play with the engine hot as described below.
1. Pull the accelerator cable towards the throttle lever.
2. Pull the cable from the throttle lever until the lever begins to move (free play).
Clutch pedal
Checking the free travel of the clutch pedal when pressing the pedal.
Steering drive system
To check the condition of the steering system, it is recommended that two mechanics be present and that the vehicle be placed on a level surface.
One of the mechanics turns the steering wheel one way, then the other, and checks its operation, fastening and condition, as well as the fastening of the steering column (with or without amplifier), while another mechanic checks the free play in the following places:
- transverse steering rods (play is not allowed),
- mounting the steering gear on the crossmember,
- universal joint of the steering shaft with movement from the steering gear upwards (play is not allowed),
- fastening and tightness of all clamps.
Starter
1. Make sure that the starting switch and contacts are securely connected.
2. Start the starter and check the following:
- the starter must maintain engine operation in standard mode,
- the starter should operate without any extraneous noise.
Starting the engine
Start the engine and check its proper operation.
If the engine does not start or stalls after starting, check the following. For more information, see the service manual:
- ignition system;
- idle air control system operation;
- sensors and engine control unit (if necessary).
Checking for extraneous noise in the engine compartment.
Start the engine and check for any abnormal noise. If abnormal noise is present, tighten or secure the parts and adjust the distance between components.
Checking the tightness of hoses, tube connections, seals, gaskets and plugs
Visually inspect hoses, tube connections, seals, gaskets and plugs for leaks and signs of leaks (drips, moisture, etc.) in the following order:
- fuel system;
- air conditioning system;
- cooling system;
- brake system;
- clutch drive;
- hydraulic power steering system.
Mechanical part of the engine:
- camshaft support housing;
- cylinder head;
- cylinder block;
- oil pan camshaft seals.
