1. Remove the floor tunnel lining (see "Removal and installation the floor tunnel lining").

HELPFUL TIP: If you have observed a creaking and sticking of the lever, but not increased play, try lubricating the lever hinge with consistent grease. After lubricating the hinge, further disassembly of the linkage may not be required.

2. Disconnect the gearbox control cables from the shift linkage (see "Replacing manual transmission control cables").

3. Unscrew the four bolts securing the gearshift lever housing to the body base and remove the gearshift lever.

4. Inspect the gear shifter. If there is play in the gear shifter hinges or the hole for the lever axis is badly worn, or the lever cracker is worn, replace the gear shifter, as its parts are not supplied separately as spare parts.
5. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.
6. Adjust the gearbox control drive (see "Adjusting the manual transmission control drive").
