Release bearing — removal, inspection and installation (Chevrolet Tahoe 1)

1. Disconnect the battery from ground.

2. Remove the gearbox.

3. On vehicles with a cast iron gearbox, remove the bell housing.

4. On pre-1995 models, remove the clutch release lever from the ball joint, remove the bearing from the lever. On 1996 models, remove the clutch slave cylinder, remove the release bearing from the slave cylinder.

5. Check the condition of the bearing, which should rotate freely, otherwise replace the bearing. It is prohibited to wash the bearing in solvent.

6. On pre-1995 models, lightly lubricate the clutch release fork grooves with high-temperature grease (see photo).

7. On pre-1995 models, secure the release bearing to the clutch release lever.

8. On pre-1995 models, lubricate the clutch release lever ball joint with high-temperature grease and install the lever onto the joint.

9. On all models, apply a thin coat of high-temperature grease to the thrust surface of the release bearing where it contacts the pressure plate diaphragm fingers.

10. On models equipped with a cast iron crankcase, install the bell housing and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

11. Before installing the transmission, apply a thin coat of high-temperature grease to the front of the input shaft bearing housing.

12. Further assembly is carried out in reverse order.
