If traces of oil leakage through the crankshaft seals are found, first check if the crankcase ventilation system is clogged and if its hoses are pinched, if necessary, troubleshoot. If the oil leak does not stop, replace the seals.
A sign of the need to replace the front crankshaft oil seal is oil leakage through its edge. In this case, the oil is sprayed by the rotating crankshaft pulley, as a result of which the entire front of the engine and the timing belt are oiled.
To replace the front crankshaft oil seal, do the following.
1. Disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery.
2. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke (see «Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke»).
3. Remove the timing belt (see «Replacing the timing belt»).
4. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
5. Remove the key from the crankshaft nose groove.
6. Using a screwdriver or wire hook, remove the oil seal from the oil pump housing.
7. Lubricate the working edge of the new oil seal with engine oil, install it in the oil pump housing, orienting the working edge inside the engine, and press the oil seal into the pump housing until it stops with a mandrel. As a mandrel, you can use a head from a tool kit of a suitable size or an old oil seal.
8. Install all removed parts and components of the gas distribution mechanism in the reverse order of removal.
9. Adjust the tension of the timing belt (see «Replacing the timing belt»).
To replace the crankshaft rear oil seal, perform the following steps.
1. Remove the gearbox (see «Removal and installation of a manual transmission» or «Removal and installation of an automatic transmission»).
2. Remove flywheel or torque converter drive plate (see «Removal and installation of a flywheel or a driving disk of the hydrotransformer»).
3. Remove the front pipe of the exhaust system (see «Downpipe replacement»).
4. Remove the oil pan (see «Replacing the oil sump seal»).
5. Turn out the screw of fastening of the gauge of provision of a cranked shaft...
6.... and remove the sensor.
7. Remove the setting disk of the crankshaft position sensor.
8. Turn out two bolts of fastening of a cover of the back radical bearing of a cranked shaft...
9.... and remove the cover.
10. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the groove in the cylinder block.
11. Grease a working edge of a new epiploon with engine oil.
12. To avoid damaging the rear oil seal lip, install the oil seal using an appropriately sized drift.
13. Install the crankshaft position sensor drive disk. When installing, align the punches on the disc with the corresponding holes on the crankshaft flange.
14. Establish the removed knots and details in an order, the return to removal.
NOTE: When installing the flywheel or driven plate, lubricate the threaded part of its fastening bolts with an anaerobic thread locker...
...and tighten them evenly in a criss-cross pattern to the torque given in appendix 1.
